Ciénaga is a collection that emerges like a domino effect of experimental needs within a design process. In its quest to expand the Materia Digital catalog, ERM Studio experimentes with aluminum drippings in sand—a material that is fully recycled. Similarly, the sand used for the molds is entirely reused to produce new pieces.
The collection consists of a series of shelves, a wall mounted cabinet, a coffee table and a lounge chair. All the main elements of the objects are made from the aluminum “drippings” while some structural elements are complemented with sold aluminum bars. After developing the chair and table and understanding their structural needs, the decision to use solid aluminum bars arose intuitively. This approach allowed for an exploration of the contrast between the spontaneous, unpredictable nature of the drippings and the cold, precise, and industrialized quality of the solid bar. As a result, each piece is composed entirely of aluminum, both in its structure and its dripped elements. Like its sibling collection, Materia Digital, it features no applied finish, ensuring its potential reintegration into the material cycle if needed.
