Sofie Østerby Atelier

Sofie Østerby (1988) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2015 with a degree in design. She spent a year studying sculptural art in Canada during her studies. Based in Copenhagen, Østerby works in a broad range of creative fields, including project design, large-scale interior design and unique sculptural works.

The creative process is both physical and digital, and it frequently involves collaboration with local workshops and furniture producers. 3D printing, casting, cutting, and milling are recurring techniques using mainly metals, stone, glass and wood as final materials. Each product achieves unique corporeality by combining traditional crafts and materials with modern techniques. Østerby describes her design method as A constant intuitive balancing between material presence and shape. As she finds beauty in the imperfect, the individual irregularities of a given material, and traces of production, are highly valued in the final piece.
