    Cal Summers

Based in New York City, Cal Summers is a British designer who makes bespoke handmade furniture and objects in which he explores the beauty of materiality and form.

Combining traditional craft techniques with modern fabrication processes, CAL SUMMERS creates pieces with an unprecedented attention to detail and an exploration into new areas of design innovation.

Coming from a family of creatives, father being a still life photographer and mother an art director, Cal was heavily influenced from an early age by the creative air that filled his family home. This would lay the foundations for his own creative ability and visual intellect.

“I’ve always had a very visual mind, I remember gazing out the window on long car rides through South East England, drawn to the shapes and textures of derelict farm buildings, and looking out for old windmills on drives through the south of France.” I guess I have the eyes of my father, as our house was always filled with odd objects and artefacts which he liked to photograph”.

After graduating in Design and Craft from the University of Brighton, Cal went on to study at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. He is recognised by leading designers and architects, and is now being represented by galleries in New York City, Montreal and Paris.

Inspired by brut architecture and his surrounding environment, Cals work forms a dialogue between contrasting elements. Pairing weathered materials with contemporary forms, his pieces could be objects from the future as well as the past
