Creating with intrinsic stories, Fabien Barrero-Carsenat views imperfection in nature as the essence of aesthetics.
With four years of studies in visual communication in Paris, he collaborated with Air France and Concorde at their CDG headquarters, as well as with Studio Collet in Saint-Ouen and the Phenomene Suresnes agency. Selected for the 2007 cohort of the École Supérieure d'Art et Design de Saint-Etienne, he pursued a practice focused on designing objects and shaping volumes. Over time, Barrero–Carsenat developed a strong interest in raw materials and what he calls “the identity of the material” spending much of his time in workshops experimenting with concepts and techniques. A period at the Polytechnic Institute of Design in Lahi, Finland, deepened his knowledge and reinforced his connection to nature, inspiring the Pinus Pinaster project.
His research into pine sap explores new forms of human connection and eco-responsible object creation, working directly with the natural properties of materials. His experimental approach led to an assistant position with Pepe Heykoop in Amsterdam. In 2013, he returned to France and transformed his grandfather’s barn in the Périgord Noir into his studio, founding Studio Fabien Barrero+ Carsenat. Choosing to work outside the city, he continues to draw inspiration and materials from his immediate environment, aligned with his philosophy of material driven design.
