Overview
James Haywood is a Franco-British artist and designer based near Montpellier.

Originally trained in aerospace engineering, he now explores alternative mineral materials and sculptural forms that exist at the intersection of design and art, creating one of a kind objects conceived for longevity, both in their physical lifespan and in the enduring relationships they foster with those who encounter them. His practice reflects a shift from precision engineering towards a more intuitive, materially driven approach, where structure and sensibility coexist.

Haywood’s work is rooted in a contemplation of our place within the wider universe, drawing subtle parallels between experience and the vast temporal scales of geological and cosmic processes. His objects often carry a quiet, elemental presence, as if shaped by forces beyond immediate perception. All stages of creation take place under one roof, from early sketches and material testing to mould making, casting, finishing, electronics, photography and even writing. This continuity allows forms to evolve slowly, shaped through repetition, adjustment and time, echoing gradual processes that define both natural formation and human existence. Through this holistic approach, Haywood’s works resists immediacy, instead embracing during, transformation and a deep attentiveness to matter and meaning.
