YOCHIYA focuses on the ambiguous realm that lies ‘beyond material, yet not a product,’ exploring the moment when a material begins to transcend its original state.
YOCHIYA is an artist duo composed of Yachiyo Kawana and Yoichiro Hatanaka, based in Tokyo, Japan. Their practice explores the space between material and product, with a particular focus on the creative process and the relationship between intention, material, and chance.
With a deep respect for tradition, craftsmanship, and the knowledge held within the human hand, YOCHIYA works through observation, documentation, and experimentation. Their practice combines traditional techniques with contemporary processes, allowing material behaviour and unexpected outcomes to become integral to the work.
The duo began working as YOCHIYA in 2019, following studies at Musashino Art University and Central Saint Martins, where Kawana studied Arts and Culture and both artists were associated with Product Design.
Their work has since been presented internationally, establishing a growing presence across the global art and design scene.
