Abid Javed is a ceramic sculptor and designer who creates collectible ‘modular objects’ using clay.
With a background in molecular biology, his work brings this unseen microscopic world into focus. The studio practice takes an abstract and surrealist approach developing sculptural landscapes inspired by biological forms and narratives. Subject matters explored include cells to molecules and biomorphism, while also drawing on his cultural heritage through reference to Islamic art, geometry and 20th century art and design. The resulting objects exist at the intersection of sculpture and design, highlighting both conceptual depth and material craftsmanship. Clay is central to his process, alongside innovative methods of integrating other materials with ceramics. Each piece is handmade and carefully crafting as it responds either to a specific design brief or an artistic concept.
