Artist and designer Jon Born founded Humble Matter in 2014, following a departure from the advertising industry to pursue a more materially grounded practice.
Working primarily in ceramics, Born creates sculptures and functional objects that explore form, tactility, and quiet presence. His work has been featured in publications such as Elle Décor, Wallpaper, Milk Decorations and Vogue, and was the subject of a first solo exhibition at Dobrinka Salzman Gallery in New York.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison (BFA), Born has lived and worked in Brooklyn since 1993. His practice is based at Wedge Ceramics in Red Hook, where a community of makers informs a hands on, process driven approach. Balancing restraint with sensitivity to material, Humble Matter reflects a sustained attention to the poetics of everyday objects, rooted in place, shaped by touch and attuned to the rhythms of daily life.
