Overview

“The pottery has something which makes me feel I am alive now. I keep working on it to seek such feelings. I always create works using a poetry wheel.”

Tomoya Sakai is a ceramicist whose work is inspired by natural materials, architectural structures and scenes from animation and science fiction films. He first encountered poetry at university in 2013, where he began working with the wheel throwing technique. This experience sparked his fascination with the sensation of tension, centrifugal force, and the way clay transforms under his hands. Sakai is particularly drawn to the firing process, which he describes as a kind of sacred ritual. He uses multiple wheel thrown pieces as a way to reorganize and assemble the chaotic images in his mind, translating them into physical forms. Through this process, he seeks to create unique and compelling visual expressions of imagined landscapes and scenes.
