Overview
Rydell’s artwork balances a strong visual approach with pleasurable home living. He applies a dual purpose to his practice, moving beyond purely aesthetic objects to create functional art.

The themes behind much of his work lie between nature and the human body, approached as a form of visual expression through high quality objects. His colorful pieces emphasize a rejection of muted, conventional tones “I find the amount of grey, brown and beige that goes into what’s supposed to be elegant home decor tends to be overwhelming. Sexy, joyful, fun is always the concept in my mind when composing new pieces.”

The beginning of his career came with the self-publication of Colored Dudes in 2014, a series of anatomical studies that sold out worldwide within 48 hours. His first solo exhibition, Rugs for Oprah, took place at La Fresh Gallery in Madrid, followed by Wonder by Wonder at P7 Gallery in Berlin, both in 2018. In 2017, his tapestry rug Rose Dipped was featured in the group exhibition Pink, curated by Luis Venegas at Colette in Paris, alongside artists such as Nan Goldin, Inez and Vinnoodh, and Juergen Teller. In 2016, his commissioned works were included in the J.W Anderson book The Rain in Spain Stays Mainly in the Plain. In recent years, Leo has presented new work during Salone del Mobile at Alcova in Milan. In addition to his artistic practice, Rydell designs leather goods and has collaborated with luxury houses including Bottega Veneta and Loewe.
