Keiichi Tanaka is a ceramic artist based in Saitama, Japan, whose work explores the quiet presence of objects shaped by time.
Through his practice, Tanaka seeks to create an atmosphere that evokes a sense of “time accumulation”, the creation of the feeling that these objects have existed for generations. Using slab building techniques combined with his own metallic glaze formulations, he produces surfaces that recall the patina and depth of ancient ceramics. His work reflects a deep appreciation for the textures, irregularities and subtle imperfections found in historical artifacts. Tanaka is particularly fascinated by the beauty of functional objects and the forms they assume through use. Rather than separating utility from aesthetics, he embraces their interdependence, allowing function to inform form in a natural and intuitive way. His pieces often suggest a quiet familiarity, as if they belong to a broader, unseen context. Through this approach, Tanaka creates work that feels both grounded and timeless, objects that carry an implied history and sense of inevitability, as though they have always existed in the spaces they inhabit.
